Briscoe's daughter OD'd, and he spends much of his time blaming himself. Lennie Briscoe passes in 2005 after retiring from the 27th precinct.

Liv watched her alcoholic mother struggle with the fact that she had been raped until the day she died, and in order to pay it forward on behalf of her mother, Benson now acts as a victims rights advocate in every single case.   

    Although she can be nurturing and helpful, don't get on Olivia Benson's bad side. She's been known to take down a perp or two, especially the ones who have tried and failed to sexually attract her. She is promoted to Sergeant after both Cragen and Munch retire, and finally understands just how difficult she, herself, was to work with when she was a young detective.

    Detective John Munch (Richard Belzer) is your classic, paranoid, misanthropic detective. He thrives off conspiracy theories, and a new ex-wife of his seems to pop up every other season. Munch is a huge advocate for the mentally ill, as several of his ex-wives and family members have suffered from mental disorders. 

    He begins his career as a detective on Homicide: Life on the Streets in the Baltimore Police Department Homicide unit. He retires, takes his pension, and moves to New York to work in the Sex Crimes unit on Law & Order: SVU. He takes the sergeant's exam on a bar bet, and passes, earning him the title of Sergeant Munch, which he serves whenever Sergeant Cragen is off duty. He eventually retires, surrounded by all of his friends at SVU.

    Detective Stabler is a no nonsense, take-no-prisoners, Irish Catholic tough guy that you can't help but love. At his core, Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni, Law & Order: SVU) is a straight-up dad, albeit one with a sick arm tattoo from the Marines and no-holds-barred interrogation tactics. If you're a pedophile, watch out; The Stabes has your number, and you're likely to be on the receiving end of his violent temper towards perps. He almost always gets the collar, but sometimes, his anger and frustration gets the better of him.  

    He retires after shooting and killing an armed suspect in the precinct; the suspect was a young girl grieving the death of her mother, and Stabler had to take her out in order to save everyone else in the squad room.

    Detective Odafin "Fin" Tutuola began his career as an undercover narcotics investigator for VICE. He used to spend more time undercover than out, causing strained relationships with his wife and son. He and his wife divorced, and his son, Ken, barely speaks to him.  

    Tutuola (Ice-T, Law & Order: SVU) grew up in Harlem during the Martin Luther King Jr. riots, and was forced to learn many hard lessons about the streets. He often butts heads with the other detectives, because he feels that criminals should be punished in a very black-and-white manner. He eventually softens up, but not until after he and Elliot Stabler get into a huge fight, and Tutuola threatens to transfer out of the department. They eventually reconcile their relationship, and Fin stays on the force.

    Despite his unorthodox methods, Detective Ed Green (Jesse L. Martin, Law & Order) is a valued member of the NYPD. He often butts heads with his superiors, because he believes in bending the law in order to catch a perp.   

    Green is shot in the line of duty, and takes a hiatus from the police force while he recovers in the hospital. A few years after his return, he is involved in a shooting, and indicted before the Grand Jury. Although he is cleared of all charges, he decides to retire from the force because he has now "broken every rule in the book."

    (#7) Robert Goren

    Detective Robert Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio, Law & Order: Criminal Intent) is probably the most intelligent detective the NYPD has ever seen. He is able to tap into the psyche of even the most complex criminals, and his unusual investigation methods almost always lead him to the right answer. Although his eccentricities sometimes rub his colleagues the wrong way, he always gets the job done.   

    Goren grew up in Brooklyn with a schizophrenic mother and an estranged, homeless older brother. These personal demons occasionally get in the way of investigating - he is suspended when he tries to help save his nephew Donny, and he becomes distraught when his brother, Frank, is murdered. It is later revealed that Goren's biological father is an imprisoned serial killer on death row named Mark Ford Brady. 

    He is ultimately pulled off the Major Case squad after a series of unorthodox investigation tactics cost him his job. In the interrogation room, Goren is most well-known for cocking his head to the side when questioning perps.

    Mike Logan (Chris Noth) is a good detective with a rough past. As a child growing up in a working-class, Irish family, he was physically abused by his Catholic mother, and sexually assaulted by a priest. He now behaves like a misanthropic womanizer to cover up the pain of his abuse.  

    Logan works for Manhattan Homicide for several years, until he is fired for engaging in a physical altercation with a homophobic politician. He is then transferred to the Staten Island Domestic Disputes squad, where he works for several years.  

    After his stint on Staten Island, it is revealed in the made for TV movie Exiled: A Law & Order Movie that he is trying to work his way back onto the Manhattan Homicide unit by solving a murder case. He is instead moved to the Major Case squad on Law & Order: Criminal Intent.  

    Detective Logan works on the MC squad for 25 years, before he develops a sense of injustice and anger against the criminal justice system. The death of his girlfriend, combined with the DA trying to cover up a 16-year-old homicide proves to be too much for him. He retires in order to do something more fulfilling with his life than be a police officer.

    Before joining the Major Case squad, Detective Alexandra Eames (Kathryn Erbe) was part of NYPD VICE for five years. She joined the police force in order to follow in the footsteps of her father, an NYPD officer.   

    Alex Eames is very pragmatic, and plays everything at MCS by the books. Her personality often clashes with her partner, Detective Goren, but they eventually grow to form a strong partnership. Occasionally, Eames crosses paths with SVU detectives to solve major cases that involve sex crimes. She and Detective Benson have a good rapport, and in one episode, she even takes down the sniper responsible for shooting Detective Rollins.

    Detective Curtis plays everything by the books - if you commit a crime, you go to jail, end of story. He joins the 27th Precinct from the Organized Crime Control Bureau, where he was forced to quit his job because one of his female co-workers was sexually harassing him.   

    His cut-and-dry detective philosophy is tested when he witnesses the violent execution of a man that he helped prosecute. In an attempt to cope with these new feelings, he cheats on his wife Deborah with a college girl. Their marriage is nearly destroyed by his indiscretion, and his relationships with his daughters suffer. They manage to save their marriage through counseling, but not long after, Deborah is diagnosed with multiple-sclerosis. Curtis believes that he is being punished for his sins.  

    Rey Curtis (Benjamin Bratt) quits the force when Deborah deteriorates to the point when she can no longer even hold a toothbrush on her own. The Curtis family moves to California, only to return 10 years later to bury Deborah on Long Island after her death.   

    Curtis often uses the Internet to help him solve crimes, carries a mobile phone, and loves the band Oasis.

    Detective Sonny Carisi (Peter Scanavino) is the most inexperienced detective at SVU. He has had brief experiences in other Burroughs, however, so the squad takes him on. When Sonny first arrives, he is too abrasive and harsh to victims, and is reprimanded for his behavior by Detective Benson. He later softens up, and has a knack for interrogation. He uses fake-empathy to pretend to be on the side of the perp in order to get them to confess, or flip on another suspect.

    Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) is a hot-shot detective from Atlanta. Although she has a tendency to get ahead of herself during cases, she quickly adjusts to life at SVU, and begins a brief, sexual relationship with Detective Amaro.   

    Rollins struggles with a gambling addiction, and it is later revealed that she was raped by Deputy Chief Charles Patton at her precinct in Atlanta. Her sister is a drug addict with several mental health issues as well. Rollins gets help for her gambling addiction, and manages to stay clean for awhile, but unfortunately, she relapses when her past is put on trial in an ongoing rape investigation.  

    Rollins has a dog named Frannie that she loves very much.

    Detective Amarto is a detective torn between two worlds. Like Detective Stabler before him, he's a family man at heart, and has a short fuse that tends to land him in hot water. His wife leaves him and takes their daughter to live with her in California. It is later revealed that Nick Amaro (Danny Pino, Law & Order: SVU) had a son out of wedlock with another woman, although he never knew that his second child existed.   

    Amaro becomes intimate with Detective Rollins after he helps her recover from her gambling addiction. He later takes the sergeant exam, but is told by Lt. Tucker that he will never be promoted to sergeant. He is subsequently shot by a suspect during an investigation, and decides to retire from the force to deal with his injuries.

    Detective Cyrus Lupo (Jeremy Sisto) works in the NYPD Intelligence Division in Pakistan for four years before transferring to the 27th Precinct. Overseas, he often worked alone, and without backup, so it's not an easy transition for him at first.  

    One Christmas morning, Lupo witnesses a father murdering his wife and two children. He develops severe PTSD, and becomes an alcoholic. His partner is killed in the line of duty after going into a bodega to buy him a coffee to help sober him up, and he decides to quit drinking and see a therapist.  

    Lupes is a big fan of graphic novels, and has a dog named Otto.

    (#15) Joe Fontana

    Joe Fontana (Dennis Farina) hails from the neighborhood of Little Italy in Chicago, and teaches the New York detectives a great deal about life in another city. He transferred to the Manhattan Homicide unit after working Homicide in the Bronx for several years.  

    He is a man of high taste, and is often seen sporting the latest styles and most expensive fashions. He even drives a Mercedes Benz SL500, and often carries upward of $1,000 in cash in his wallet. The other detectives are suspicious of this flashy behavior at first, but they soon come to accept it.   

    Fontana believes in respect above all else, so perps beware: do not call him a "cop" in the interrogation room, or it just might be the last thing you do.

    (#16) Phil Cerreta

    Sargeant Phil Cerreta (Paul Sorvino) is brought in to the 27th Precinct to investigate the murder of Sgt. Greevey. He often uses his charm and good manners to investigate cases. Phil has never fired his gun during his entire career as a detective.   

    Cerreta is shot in the line of duty by an insane drug addict, and forced to take a desk job at the 110th Precinct. He has a wife and a 15-year-old daughter named Linda.

    Detective Kevin Bernard (Anthony Anderson) first appeared as a member of the Internal Affairs Bureau, investigating the shooting of Ed Green. Bernard is Catholic, and very conservative. He is pro-life, and understanding towards those who hate illegal immigrants.   

    Bernard, ironically, hates dogs, and earns himself the nickname "St. Bernard."

    Detective Nichols grew up with two psychiatrists for parents, and, in an act of rebellion, decided to become a police officer. After 9/11, he takes seven years off the force, and the only known clue of his whereabouts is a postcard he sends to the squad postmarked in Cleveland, OH. He eventually returns to the force, and continues solving crimes. In his spare time, Zack Nichols (Jeff Goldblum, Law & Order: Criminal Intent) loves to play the piano. He eventually reconciles with his father when the two of them solve a case together before Nichols retires.

    Detective Chester Lake's ancestors are of Mohawk Nation decent, and have been living in New York City for several generations. He is a MMA fighter who goes by the nickname "Naptime," because of his signature sleeper-hold. Ironically, he suffers from severe insomnia, which he tries to clear by wandering the streets at night. Chester Lake (Adam Beach, Law & Order: SVU) grew up in the foster care system, and his brother went to jail on his behalf after the two committed a crime so that he could follow his dreams of being a police officer.   

    Lake is a member of the Vidocq Society in Pennsylvania that works together to try to solve cold cases. He is involved in a shooting with one of the men accused of raping and murdering two victims in a decade-old rape/homicide case. He is later cleared of all charges, because it is revealed that Lake killed the suspect in self-defense. However, Lake is later found standing over the body of the second suspect, and is arrested for murder.

    (#20) Megan Wheeler

    • Law & Order: Criminal Intent

    Detective Wheeler joins the MCS as Detective Barek's replacement. Previously, she worked undercover for several years, investigating drug crimes, money laundering, and white-collar crimes.   

    Megan Wheeler (Julianne Nicholson, Law & Order: Criminal Intent) is often made fun of by the other guys on the squad for being so young, but her youth comes in handy when it comes time to solve crimes that involve short-hand teenager lingo via text messages. She takes a break from MCS at one point to teach a class in Europe.  

    Later, Wheeler is impregnated by her fiancé, who has recently been arrested for money laundering and racketeering by the FBI. She gives birth to his child, and subsequently retires.

She's a Catholic, and was raised by an extremely abusive mother. She is fluent in several languages, including Polish, Spanish, Cantonese, Yiddish, Russian, and Creole.   

    Barek is ultimately a caretaker, and although she and Detective Logan don't see eye-to-eye, she always has his back. She leaves MCS on bad terms with him.

    Detective Monique Jeffries (Michelle Hurd) begins her career at SVU by being a street-wise detective; she's tough on crime, and always plays by the book. She admits to a staff psychologist to having random, casual sex with a person involved in a prior rape investigation, and is transferred to the VICE unit.

    Even though Detective Falco seems like a loose cannon, he's actually a law student, which leads him to be more cautious than his partners would like. He often calls out other detectives for breaking little-known laws, even though in court their "crimes" would have been seen as good-faith arrests.   

    Nick Falco (Michael Imperioli) has two children; a boy and a girl. One night, he brings home a date to his apartment, and when he wakes up, he finds her murdered. After his squad investigates, it is found that she was a member of a crime family known for committing robberies, and that she had drugged Falco's drink with Rohypnol.

    Detective Nola Falacci (Alicia Witt, Law & Order: Criminal Intent) is assigned to the NYPD Major Case squad when Detective Wheeler is sent overseas to Europe. Her personality is abrasive, and she is self-described as "not much of a people person." She leaves MCS when Wheeler returns in order to train for the FBI Program at Quantico.   

    Falacci is happily married with three children.

After losing her temper during an investigation, Cassady is reprimanded and fired.
