Anakin Skywalker is easily the most infamous Jedi to ever turn to the dark side. Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn discovered young Anakin on the desert planet of Tatooine and believed the boy was the Chosen One who would finally bring balance to the Force. But there was too much darkness in Anakin, and the boy began training as a Jedi at a much older age than most Padawan learners. He was known to be capricious and reckless, and often disobeyed his master, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

His emotional attachment to his mother, Shmi Skywalker, and his secret wife, Padme Amidala, eventually led him to the dark side. He slaughtered the village of Sand People who kidnapped and tortured his mother to death and joined the Sith in order to save Padme, whom he believed would perish during childbirth. In trying to save those he loved, Anakin only found more pain and eventually became the feared Darth Vader.

  • (#2) Revan

    • Star Wars

Revan was a controversial Jedi Knight who lived thousands of years before the prequel trilogy. He was the leader of a faction within the Order called the Revanchists, a group of Jedi Knights who decided to fight for the Republic during the Mandalorian Wars. The Mandalorians were a fierce enemy, devastating planets throughout the galaxy, and Revan had grown frustrated with the Order’s unwillingness to get involved in the fight.

While Revan eventually defeated the Mandalorian forces and was hailed as a hero of the Republic, all of this fighting eventually led to his fall to the dark side. After the defeat of Mandalore the Ultimate, the Mandalorian leader, Revan traveled to the Unknown Regions of space to investigate a possible Sith connection to the Mandalorian threat. It was in the farthest edges of space he encountered a resurgent Sith Empire.

When the Jedi hero of the Republic returned to known space, it was as a new Dark Lord of the Sith, ready to fight against his former allies.

  • (#3) Jacen Solo

    • Star Wars

Jacen Solo was the son of Han and Leia. He was a great Jedi hero and fought to protect the New Republic on several occasions. Most notably, he fought in the Yuuzhan Vong War, during which he was captured and forced into submitting to the dark side before reconciling with the light side. As he grew older, Jacen became more determined to lead an increasingly fractured galaxy into an era of peace.

After experiencing a vision of a tyrant who would take over the galaxy and foreseeing the end of Luke Skywalker, Jacen joined forces with the Dark Lady Lumiya, the resurgent leader of the Sith, and became Darth Caedus. As a Sith Lord, Jacen took control of the Galactic Alliance, tormented Luke’s son, and slew his aunt. Jacen became the evil he had once tried to prevent. In the tragic climax of the Legacy of the Force book series, Jaina, Jacen’s twin sister, is forced to take her brother's life in order to save the galaxy from his reign of terror.

Dooku was once a great Jedi Master, but he left the Order after becoming disillusioned with the corruption within the Galactic Republic. He became a member of the Lost Twenty, a group of Jedi Masters who had renounced the Order and its teachings throughout history. Despite having trained under Yoda, one of the greatest Jedi Masters of all time, Dooku still felt the pull of the dark side.

He eventually crossed paths with Darth Sidious and became his loyal apprentice. With Dooku’s help, Sidious was able to fight against the Galactic Republic that engulfed most of the known galaxy. Unfortunately for Dooku, Sidious disposed of him as soon as he found a more powerful apprentice in Anakin Skywalker.

    (#5) Asajj Ventress

Ventress spent most of her early life as a slave on the wartorn planet Rattatak, a world which was ruled by pirates. Upon meeting a Jedi Knight named Ky Narec who was fighting back the pirates, Ventress discovered she was strong in the Force. Narec decided to train her as his apprentice while they continued to fight the pirates.

Unfortunately, Narec was eventually slain and Ventress was left without guidance. She embraced the dark side and eventually joined Count Dooku as a hired lightsaber for the Sith. During the Clone Wars, Ventress became known as one of the Separatists’ most feared agents, amassing quite the body count along the way.

  • Ben Solo on Random Powerful Jedi Who Broke Bad And Turned To The Dark Sid

    (#6) Ben Solo

Not much is known about Ben Solo’s fall to the dark side. We do know that from a very early age, Luke and Leia both sensed a lot of Darth Vader in him. When Luke decided to train a new group of Jedi, he took Ben under his wing in the hopes that the young Solo would embrace the light side. But the pull towards the dark was too strong. Supreme Leader Snoke of the First Order finally corrupted Ben and turned him into an agent of evil.

Ben became the masked Kylo Ren, leader of Snoke’s Force-sensitive Knights of Ren, and committed atrocious acts across the galaxy, including wiping an entire village on Jakku, obliterating the Hosnian System, and slaying his father, Han Solo. He even took out his master, Snoke, on the way to becoming Supreme Leader himself. After all that, Kylo seemed beyond redemption, but after being wounded by Rey, he abandons Kylo and embraces Ben, becoming a swashbuckling hero in the process.

  • Ulic Qel-Droma on Random Powerful Jedi Who Broke Bad And Turned To The Dark Sid

    (#7) Ulic Qel-Droma

    • Star Wars

Ulic Qel-Droma’s story is about as tragic as they come. He was born into a family of Jedi. His mother was powerful in the Force, and so was his brother, Cay. It made sense, then, when Ulic joined the Order and fought in the Beast Wars on the planet Onderon, which was ruled by a royal family that worshipped the dark side. Later, Ulic was part of a mission to defeat an evil cult known as the Krath in the Empress Teta system, where he witnessed the demise of his master.

A grief-stricken Ulic swore to avenge his master and embarked on an undercover mission to infiltrate the Krath and wipe them out. However, Ulic fell to the dark side and became the new leader of the cult. When his brother tried to stop him from committing any more cruel acts, Ulic slew Cay in cold blood in front of all of his former friends. Eventually, he became Exar Kun’s Sith apprentice.

Nomi Sunrider, one of his former friends, was forced to sever Ulic’s connection to the Force, leaving him powerless and broken. Ulic lived out the rest of his days in exile.

  • Quinlan Vos on Random Powerful Jedi Who Broke Bad And Turned To The Dark Sid

    (#8) Quinlan Vos

    • Star Wars

Quinlan Vos was a brilliant Jedi Master and one of the greatest warriors to fight in the Clone Wars. His eventual fall to the dark side was heartbreaking to his fellow Jedi, especially because they were the ones at fault for Vos’s corruption.

The Jedi Council decided there was enough fighting in the galaxy and sent Vos to find Count Dooku, the leader of the Separatists, and end him. In order to get close to Dooku, Vos was partnered with the villain’s former apprentice, Asajj Ventress, who was fueled by revenge after being betrayed by the Sith.

During their mission, Ventress persuaded Vos to tap into the dark side because she believed it was the only way to defeat the Sith Lord. This eventually led to Vos fully converting to the dark side after being captured by Dooku. Vos became a feared Separatist agent for a time but was eventually rescued by the Jedi, who rehabilitated him.

  • Luke Skywalker on Random Powerful Jedi Who Broke Bad And Turned To The Dark Sid

    (#9) Luke Skywalker

    • Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, Star Wars Holiday Special, Return of the Ewok, Star Wars

While Luke never fell to the dark side in the original trilogy, he did eventually join the Emperor in the Legends (read: non-canon) comic book series Dark Empire. Although the Emperor did indeed perish at the end of Return of the Jedi, the all-powerful Sith Lord planned for his eventual defeat and cloned himself in order to retake the galaxy.

When Luke came face-to-face with the reborn Emperor, the young Jedi was disarmed by the truth. Faced with the decision to join the Sith or watch the New Republic be wiped out by the Emperor’s new fleet of World Devastators (which do exactly what the name suggests), Luke had no choice but to kneel.

Luke’s hope was that he could end the Emperor (and thus the Empire) from the inside, but the pull of the dark side was too powerful even for him. A broken Luke was only able to break the yoke of the Emperor’s control thanks to Leia’s light side presence during a rescue mission. Together, they eventually defeated the Emperor once and for all.

  • Barriss Offee on Random Powerful Jedi Who Broke Bad And Turned To The Dark Sid

    (#10) Barriss Offee

    • Star Wars

Stories in the Legends canon portrayed young Barriss Offee as a talented Jedi healer who served valiantly during the Clone Wars. The newly established Star Wars canon, however, took Offee’s story in a different direction. After becoming disillusioned with the steps the Jedi Order were taking to end the conflict and growing increasingly aggressive in the process, Offee decided to take matters into her own hands. She executed a bombing in the Jedi Temple that took out many Jedi (and clone troopers) in the hopes this would cause a rift between the Order and the Republic.

When Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker’s apprentice, was wrongfully accused of the deed, Offee did not come to her aid and confess. Instead, it wasn’t until Anakin himself confronted her that Offee finally revealed that she had orchestrated the act. She was marked a traitor and detained for her acts.

  • (#11) Darth Malak

    • Star Wars

Born as Alek, this Jedi Knight eventually took the name Malak and became close friends with Revan, a hero who led a group of Jedi to the Republic’s aid during the devastating Mandalorian Wars. Malak fought alongside Revan as a general and eventually followed him into the Unknown Regions to investigate the source of the Mandalorian threat. That’s when Revan and Malak came face to face with the Sith Emperor, who quickly converted them to the dark side and anointed them the new Dark Lords of the Sith.

Upon returning to Republic space, Darth Revan and Darth Malak fought against the galaxy and the Jedi. Malak served as Revan’s apprentice during the early days of the Jedi Civil War. Eventually, however, Malak betrayed Revan and usurped his role as Dark Lord of the Sith. Malak was eventually defeated by a rehabilitated Revan, who rejoined the Jedi Order and embraced the light side.

  • (#12) Exar Kun

    • Star Wars

In the days of the Legends timeline, Exar Kun was known as one of the most evil Sith Lords in history. But before he fought against the Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic, he was a Jedi. Still, even as a member of the Order, he showed a great interest in the history of the Sith and became obsessed with learning all of their ancient secrets.

This eventually led him to the tomb of Freedon Nadd, an ancient Sith Lord, on a moon called Dxun. Nadd’s spirit quickly exploited Kun’s penchant for the dark side and turned the young Jedi into his deadliest agent. Sometime later, Kun was anointed the Dark Lord of the Sith.

  • Allya on Random Powerful Jedi Who Broke Bad And Turned To The Dark Sid

    (#13) Allya

Allya was a talented Jedi Knight who lived hundreds of years before the events of the film saga. At some point, she turned to the dark side and was exiled by the Jedi Order. They sent her to the planet Dathomir, a penal colony where she could be rehabilitated.

Instead, Allya used her Force powers and influence to create a new matriarchal society on the planet and became the leader of a group of Rancor-taming women known as the Witches of Dathomir. They practiced what they thought was magic on beasts and the male slave population on the planet. The Nightsisters are descendants of Allya.

  • (#14) Freedon Nadd

    • Star Wars

Freedon Nadd was one of the most feared Sith Lords in galactic history, but he began his career as a Jedi Knight. He trained on the planet Ossus and was considered a prodigy by his masters. He was so powerful and intelligent, his masters decided to test his humility by skipping over him when it was time to name him a Jedi Knight.

Nadd became obsessed with becoming a Jedi Knight, and his anger eventually caused him to slay one of his masters in a lightsaber duel. Nadd quickly abandoned the Order altogether and set out to find the Sith.

He became one of the most powerful Dark Lords of the Sith who ever lived, ruling the planet Onderon for more than 100 years. Even after he passed, his spirit continued to linger in his tomb and influenced a cult of followers who fought against the Jedi. His greatest pupil of all was the dreaded Exar Kun.

  • (#15) Darth Traya

    • Star Wars

After Revan and Malak were defeated by the Jedi Order, there was relative peace for a time before darkness once again engulfed the galaxy. The First Jedi Purge wiped out most of the Jedi in the galaxy, and Sith warlords fought for the remnants of their fallen empire.

Eventually, a triumvirate was established to rule over the remaining Sith. Kreia, an exiled Jedi Master who had fallen to the dark side, became the Dark Lord of the Sith Triumvirate, under the name Darth Traya. Along with her two apprentices, Darth Sion and Darth Nihilus, Traya obliterated her former Jedi comrades in cold blood.

While Traya was eventually usurped by her apprentices and stripped of her Force powers, but she regained power by manipulating a former Jedi General named Meetra Surik into defeating her apprentices and luring out the remaining Jedi. Surik, however, defeated Traya in the end.

  • (#16) Darth Krayt

    • Star Wars

A'Sharad Hett was the son of a former Jedi Knight who later became the warlord of a tribe of Tusken Raiders on Tatooine. It was inevitable, then, that a little darkness flowed through Hett as well. While he spent much of his young life fighting alongside the Jedi in the Clone Wars, he was eventually forced to abandon the Order after Emperor Palpatine’s Order 66 brought about the eradication of the Jedi.

For a while, Hett worked as a bounty hunter, until he made his way to the ancient Sith planet of Korriban. There, he was turned to the dark side by Dark Lord XoXann. Many years later, the Sith resurfaced under the leadership of Hett, who had become Darth Krayt. His cult of Sith followers brought about the destruction of the New Jedi Order. It wasn’t until a descendant of Luke Skywalker named Cade confronted him that Krayt was finally defeated.

  • (#17) Atris

Atris was once a respected Jedi Master and historian and had a seat on the Council during the Mandalorian Wars before the First Jedi Purge annihilated most of the Order. After a plan to lure out the Sith enemy resulted in the planet-wide genocide of Katarr, Atris went into seclusion on the planet Telos IV and established a new Jedi Academy.

While collecting intelligence on the Sith that hunted down her Order, Atris fell victim to the influence of ancient Sith holocrons and turned to the dark side. Her former friend Meetra Surik confronted her on Telos IV and convinced her to return to the light.

  • (#18) Phanius

Phanius was a talented Jedi Master who was renowned for his intelligence and charisma. However, he was also very self-centered and individualistic, traits that were highly disconcerting to the Jedi Order (and for good reason). His beliefs eventually led him away from the Jedi and to ancient Sith knowledge, which he used to reorganize a dark side cult as the beginning of a new Sith Empire.

The former Jedi took the name Darth Ruin and convinced other Jedi to join him, causing a schism within the Order. Ruin’s reign led to a new series of conflicts between the Jedi and Sith, plunging the galaxy into 1000 years of darkness.

While Ruin’s reign didn’t last very long (he was taken out by his followers), his influence was felt throughout the galaxy for an entire millennia.

  • Jerec on Random Powerful Jedi Who Broke Bad And Turned To The Dark Sid

    (#19) Jerec

    • Star Wars

Jerec was the Jedi Order’s foremost archaeologist during the days before the Clone Wars. While his pursuit of new sources of knowledge was perhaps noble at first, his obsession with learning the secrets of the Jedi and the galaxy soon led him to the dark side.

The archaeologist spent all of the Clone Wars on a research mission in the Unknown Regions beyond the charted galaxy. He hoped to find lost Jedi artifacts in those deep stretches of space, but when he returned to what was once Republic space, he discovered there was no one left to report his findings to.

Jerec eventually joined the Empire and became an Inquisitor, bent on hunting down the remaining Jedi. His obsession with knowledge only grew, which eventually sent him on a search for the Valley of the Jedi, which he believed would bestow great power to the person who found it. His search for it on the lost planet of Ruusan, the site of an ancient conflict between the Jedi and Sith, ultimately led to his downfall.

  • (#20) Desann

Even during his time in Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Academy on Yavin 4, Desann was a troubled pupil who bullied the other students. After he slew a fellow apprentice in a fit of rage, Desann left the Jedi Order and embraced the dark side. Sometime later, he joined forces with Lord Hethrir, the Dark Jedi leader of the Empire Reborn movement, which sought to reestablish Imperial control across the galaxy.

As the second in command of the Empire Reborn, Desann led a force of Force-sensitive stormtroopers and Dark Jedi to Yavin 4 in order to seize control of Luke’s Jedi Academy. Fortunately, a mercenary-turned-Jedi named Kyle Katarn was able to take down the Imperial forces and defeat Desann in combat.
