  Sebastian Michaelis is, in his own words, one hell of a butler. After promising to serve Ciel Phantomhive in exchange for being allowed to devour his soul, he becomes the butler of the Phantomhive household. His job isn't just to run the household and basically raise the twelve-year-old orphan, it's also to help him get revenge on the people who orphaned him in the first place.

  As a demon, Sebastian has a wide range of abilities. There's the aforementioned soul consumption: that's how he satiates his hunger. He's also immortal, super strong, super fast, super hardy, and capable of sensing things that ordinary humans can't. He has control over fire, he can levitate, he can transform, and he can manifest a whole mansion out of nothing. Oh, and he can create powerful illusions to manipulate people into doing what he wants. You do not want to mess with this hellish butler.

  • Hellsing Ultimate: Vol. 1, Hellsing

  Integra Hellsing's butler Walter C. Dornez is actually one of the most important members of his boss' vampire-hunting organization. That's because he's the person who supplies the weaponry for Seras and Alucard. Besides that, he's a capable fighter in his own right, preferring to use long, microfiliment wires. With this weapon, he's able to take out multiple vampires in a single shot. Besides that, he possesses enhanced speed, strength, and durability. 

  Unlike many of the butlers on this list, Walter doesn't stay loyal to his employers: rather, he sells them out to an organization called Millennium and gets a whole bunch of enhancements that make him about a billion times stronger than he used to be.

  While it might seem like Watari does very little besides offer up delicious confections at L's request, there's a lot more to the old man than meets the eye. He's actually the owner of Wammy's House, an orphanage that finds the smartest kids on the planet and trains them to take on the lofty position of the world's greatest detective. He's been providing support to L since he was a child, but while part of it involves caring for his basic needs, some of it involves brokering connections with powerful people and wielding a sniper rifle. No matter how smart L might be, he'd be helpless without Watari and both of them know it.

  (#4) Tohru - 'Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid'

  Kobayashi is a computer programmer who starts living with a dragon named Tohru after a drunken encounter in the woods. Tohru takes on maidly duties, cleaning Kobayashi's house, cooking meals, and running other errands during the day. Sometimes this means doing laundry with her spit or trying to serve her own tail for dinner, but that's what happens when you employ a dragon to do housework.

  Tohru does more than just maintain the household, however. She's apparently one of the strongest dragons from her realm, so wildly powerful that she could easily bring down the apocolypse if she chose to. She can breathe fire and seems to have full control over the elements. She's also one of the few dragons who can easily warp between dimensions. These skills are sometimes used for comedic effect, but every once in a while she actually has to fight another supernatural creature.

  (#5) Canary - 'Hunter X Hunter'

  Canary is an apprentice butler at the Zoldyck household. Her job is to keep out unwanted visitors away from the family, which is a pretty important gig given their practice of churning out brainwashed mercinaries. Butlers in the Zoldyck household are expected to suppress their emotions until they appear practically soulless, but Canary still has some heart in her. Though she does fight Gon at first to keep him away from Killua, she eventually asks Gon to save Killua from his horrible family - her employers. 

  How does she fight Gon in the first place? She uses a rod as a weapon for physical attacks, but she can also use assassination techniques like Shadow Step. While she's never seen using any specific Nen techniques, the fact that she was able to fuel a motorcycle with her aura implies that if she wanted to, she could.

  (#6) Sayoko Shinozaki

  Though she appears to be a simple maid, Sayoko Shinozaki actually plays a key role in helping Lelouch with his plans. She's the household maid for both Lelouch and Nunally. She's both devoted to Nunally's care and in favor of Lelouch's attempts to free the Japanese people from tyranny. She knows of his identity as Zero, pretends to be Lelouch at Ashford Academy so that he can take care of his guerrila activities without suspicion, and leads the charge to rescue Nunally.

  How is she able to do all that? Because she's actually the heir to a special form of martial arts passed on by the Shinozaki family. Unlike Lelouch, who is relatively out of shape, Sayoko can kick butt without breaking a sweat.

  As the head butler of the Great Tomb of Nazarick, Sebas Tian's fighting skills are just as polished and seasoned as his appearance. He's considered one of the four strongest warriors within Nazarick. Created by the great knight Touch Me, Sebas takes after his master's moral compass, helping those in need, even if they're humans. But when faced with an opponent, he sheds away his chivalrous demeanor and shows off his incredible combat skills.

  While Norman Burg does take care of some of his employer Roger's every day needs, like providing him with meals, that's not his primary function. His main job is actually defending the mansion against its various attackers. He can wield handguns, chain guns, machine guns, and rifles with ease. Oh, and he's also a talented mechanic who is in charge of the team who maintains the Big O mecha. The fact that Roger doesn't seem to be able to pay him on time is obscene.

  In a former life, Roberta Cisneros was a guerrila warrior for F.A.R.C, who was trained to take on assassination missions in Cuba. Eventually, she got tired of committing what she saw as senseless acts of violence for people who viewed her as a tool, so she decided to take a job as a maid for the Lovelace family instead. Though terrible at her domestic duties, she is fiercely protective of the family, especially young Garcia.

  She hasn't completely forgotten her combat skills, however. She's proficient with an assortment of weapons, including heavy guns like the Barrett M82A1 anti-material sniper rifle with an attached grenade launcher, a SPAS-12 shotgun that looks like an umbrella, knives, brass knuckles, and more. Besides that, she's a skilled martial artist with incredible stealth and tracking abilities.

  He's got the looks, the charms, the undying loyalty, and the deadly combat skills. What more could you want in a butler? Hagi is a chevalier, which means he possesses superhuman strength and speed. He can also shape-shift and heal his own wounds with his chiropteran blood. It's no wonder the series' heroine, Saya, falls in love with her powerful and devoted butler.

  The twin sister to Ram, she is a maid who works for Roswaal L Mathers. And although she is not as confident or outspoken as her twin, her loyalty and devotion to Subaru would make you want her by your side in times of crises. She's not the series' best girl for nothing.

  Unlike her twin, Rem, she isn't afraid to speak her mind and is confident about her abilities. Ram was gifted with a talent for mana manipulation and considered to be a skillfull user in wind magic. She is fiercely loyal to Roswaal and regards him as the most important person in her life, along with her sister. Although she doesn't get as much spotlight as Rem, Ram is an extremely capable and loveable maid.

  Gilbert Nightray occupies many roles, but in the current timeline of Pandora Hearts, he works as a valet for the Vessalius family, specifically attending to Oz. After Oz winds up trapped in the Abyss, Gilbert makes it his mission to rescue him. He does this through a combination of his own fighting prowess and his chain, Raven. On his own, Gilbert is a skilled gun-user who possesses enhanced speed, stamina, and resistance.

  Raven, a creature from the Abyss who he contracted with, grants him access to a wider range of skills. Through Raven, he can create extremely hot blue flames, seal other chains, teleport, create illusions, and use the Chains of Condemnation, which pass judgment on those who have been accused of sin, and open up portals to the Abyss.

  • Hayate the Combat Butler

  Hayate Ayasaki is one of the few examples of a butler who actually is the main character. Before coming to work for the Sanzenin family, Hayate worked a wide range of odd jobs in order to support his deadbeat parents. This gives him a plethora of practical skills ranging from cooking and cleaning to cheating at mahjong. Also, his first butler job involved working for Athena Tennousu, who helped him to gain supernatural strength. 

  The way he got his job with the Sanzenin family is wild: he kidnaped her in order to pay off his parents' debts to the yakuza, and she mistook the kidnapping as a love confession, and paid off the debt for him. To work off the debt, he lends his services to the family as a combat butler, beating the stuffing out of anybody to tries to harm Nagi. Aside from using his super strength, he's also proficient with a wide range of weapons, from swords to guns.

  • Soul Eater

  Mosquito is the top henchmen in Arachne's organization Arachnophobia, as well as her personal servant. While he appears to be a very small and relatviely harmless old man, there's much more to him than meets the eye. He's a Bloodsucker, which gives him several special abilities. One of those is, well, sucking blood, which he can use to weaken his enemies and heal his own injuries. His nose also transforms into a powerful stinger, which he often uses in lunge attacks. He can also transform his body. When he does so, he's able to harness the powers he once possessed during other periods of his life. Oh, and that life has been going on for 800+ years. He isn't immortal, but his lifespan far exceeds what humans can expect.

  • Keroro Gunso the Super Movie: Creation! Ultimate Keroro, Wonder Space-Time Island

  Paul Moriyama serves as a butler for the Nishizawa family, with most of his loyalty being directed toward Momoka. While he performs ordinary butler tasks like serving tea, he is also extremely protective over Momoka. If she's in danger, he marshals every ounce of combat experience he has to beat them into the ground. He's even attacked Momoka's father Baio, who is technically his employer, in order to do what he thought was best for Momoka. In the dub, he claims that his power comes from his mustache. While that's probably not true, it's pretty funny.

  (#17) Kogarashi & Fubuki - 'Kamen No Maid Guy'

  Kamen No Maid Guy is a 2008 anime that's entirely about this trope. Naeka and Kosuke are set to inherit a massive fortune, and there are plenty of people who wish to steal it from them. Fubuki and Kogarashi are hired with a dual purpose - to work as household maids, and to serve as bodyguards to protect Naeka and Kosuke against those who want to steal that fortune.

  Of the two, Fubuki is far more calm: she uses her ninjalike skills with grace, and she takes charge of fixing the problems that her more boistrous coworker causes. Kogarashi is practically invulnerable to attack, but because of his inability to understand social norms and his tendency to do lewd things by mistake, he often causes problems unintentionally.

  As the senior maid working for the Minazuki family, it's Tachibana's job to make sure that the other employees are actually doing their jobs. But aside from household duties, she's also wildly talented at martial arts and throwing darts. If you get her angry, it's not going to end well for you - but she can sometimes be placated by cute things like teddy bears.

  (#19) Roberto - 'Monster'

  Roberto, whose real named is Adolf Reinhart, is a former resident of the Kinderheim 511. He is absolutely devoted to Johan Liebert, to the point of being fanatical about it. In his eyes, Johan can do no wrong, and he takes everything that he says as the absolute, unquestionable truth. This kind of sycophantic loyalty comes across as wildy creepy, but it's backed up with some serious muscle. Roberto is an enormous man who is trained in wrestling techniques. What's more, he has nearly inhuman levels of stamina, which means he can continue fighting long after many of his opponents are exhausted. He also knows his way around a gun. If you mess with him - or with his beloved Johan - you're in for a world of hurt.
