In honor of BMW's upcoming 100th birthday, freelance automotive designer Dejan Hristov came up with this. It's named after German engineer Karl Friedrich Rapp, who originally founded BMW almost a century ago. While this isn't an "official" BMW design, the company would sure be doing well to take Hristov up on his design ideas. -

A few years ago, coming up on its hundredth birthday, BMW began launching a line of retro "Hommage" cars. And so far, every one of them has been a winner -- including this modern BMW concept car take on the classic M1. -

Here's the other car that set BMW's modern design language: the Chris Bangle designed X Coupe. Bangle's heavily faceted "flame surface" design treatment has become the stuff of controversy in subsequent years. But that's probably only because Bangle's design was a victim of its own success, being so immediately popular that practically everyone began to rip it off. If they didn't just hire Bangle directly. And that's how a bunch of Fords, Aston Martins, Jaguars, Opels, Fiats, Ferraris and Kias started to look like dated BMWs.
