(#1) Benjamin, The Last Captive Tasmanian Tiger - 1933

The animal faced harsh conditions from farmers and hunters when sheep were introduced to Tasmania, being blamed for every missing flock. Benjamin, whose actual gender is debated, lived at the Hobart Zoo and was the last known member of the species until his death in 1936. Reports at the time indicated that Benjamin died as a result of a zookeeper forgetting to unlock his enclosure for the night, forcing Benjamin to sleep on the concrete in the cold. There are rumors of thylacine sightings from time to time to this day, but nothing has ever been confirmed.
