  (#7) Syaoran Has A Crush On Yukito

  In Syaoran's first full appearance, he tries to take on Yukito in a fight but is stopped cold by the sight of him. He blushes and runs away, embarrassed. For the next chunk of the series, Syaoran can barely function around Yukito and even discusses his crush with Sakura. While it's later revealed this was only because he sensed the magical being within Yukito, it's still wonderful to see the lead male character of a series get a crush on a guy and not go through an over-the-top emotional identity crisis. It's just handled as a matter of course.

  (#6) Sakura Is The Best Ally Ever

  After Sakura confesses her long held crush on Yukito, the older teen finally admits (to both her and the audience) that he loves Sakura’s brother, Toya. Rather than freak out, she promises to have their backs. To have your heart broken by someone one second and then be the biggest supporter for their new relationship? Sakura is the best kind of ally. Plus she (lovingly) promises to pick on Toya if he makes Yukito cry.

  (#2) Tomoyo Even Proclaims Her Love for Sakura

  At the end of episode 10, Sakura and Tomoyo discuss their families histories. Afterwards, Sakura says she loves Tomoyo, although it’s clearly meant to be friendly and platonic. When Sakura turns away, Tomoyo quietly whispers that she really loves Sakura. It leaves no question that Tomoyo is feeling romantic love.

  (#10) Male Characters Can Be Weak And Open Up About Their Feelings

  A lot of homophobia, especially towards gay men, can come from the perception that guys can't be "weak." In Cardcaptor Sakura, however, all the male characters, especially Yukito, are open about what's going on with them emotionally and aren't afraid to cry it out if needed. The way they eschew traditional masculine stereotypes and embrace emotional openness and honesty allows for a much richer, deeper form of storytelling.

  (#9) The English Manga Maintained The Gay Themes

  While the English dub of Cardcaptor Sakura eliminated a lot of the romantic themes of the original series, it was basically impossible to get rid of everything. That allowed some young fans to pick up on the homosexual elements of the series and seek out the source material. The English version of the Cardcaptor Sakura manga, fortunately, kept in pretty much everything from the original and allowed Western audiences to delve fully into the world as the authors CLAMP intended.

  (#12) In 'Cardcaptor Sakura,' No One Cares If You're Gay

  It can not be overstated how much of a non-issue it is being gay in the world of Cardcaptor Sakura. There's zero homophobia. It's just as normal for a guy to like a guy as it is for a guy to like a girl. Both the 10-year-old leads and the adult characters never question it. Love is such a huge theme of this series that to deny it to anyone, especially gay characters, just wouldn't fit.
