Ru has always known she was special. She once told Contemporary Black Biography “[at] five-years-old [sic], I realized I was a superstar trapped in a five-year-old’s body. And I had to do something about that!”
Years later, in an interview with Spin, she said “[even] then I knew I had a different perspective on the world. I was not doing the same things other kids were doing, and I was looking at things as an observer, as an outsider, like an alien.”

RuPaul tells a lot of amazing stories about her mother. In a 2013 interview with US Weekly, Ru said that her Louisiana-born mother Ernestine "Toni" Charles came up with the "Ru" half of RuPaul "from roux, which is the term for the base of gumbo and other [Creole] stews and soups."
