Severus has a wand, but due to his role as spy, he can't duel Voldemort without effectively breaking his cover and losing any chance of protecting Harry effectively. Harry is present in both scenes to witness it. Lily and Severus' deaths gave Harry the ability to survive Voldemort's killing curse.
