About This Tool

In 1966 the NFL and AFL decided to negotiate a merger, still operating independently for the first four years, but the League’s champions would play each other in the finals at the end of the season, it also kicked off the Super Bowl tradition. In 1970, the merger of the two major leagues was officially completed and unified operating standards began. The merged general league adopted the name of the NFL. The original AFL adopted three NFL teams and became AFC, while the original NFL changed its name to NFC.
