The Diagnosis: Avoidant personality disorder (APD)

What Is APD? According to WebMD, APD "is characterized by feelings of extreme social inhibition, inadequacy, and sensitivity to negative criticism and rejection." A key symptom includes, "Avoiding work, social, or school activities for fear of criticism or rejection. It may feel as if you are frequently unwelcome in social situations, even when that is not the case. This is because people with avoidant personality disorder have a low threshold for criticism and often imagine themselves to be inferior to others."

Who doesn’t love Charlie Brown from Peanuts? You may be surprised that this comic character suffers from APD. Chuck always gets the sense that no one likes him and everyone is making fun of him. He is preoccupied entirely by his own short-comings in life. He also carries the constant fear of being rejected. One of the great things about Charlie Brown is that he does not necessarily let his psychological issues ruin his life. He keeps trying to kick that football!

  • Tiana on Random Cartoon Characters You Never Realized Suffer From Mental Disorders

    (#14) Tiana

    • The Princess and the Frog, Disney Princess

    The Diagnosis: Zoophilia

What Is Zoophilia? According to MedicineNet.com, zoophilia is a " sexual disorder involving an erotic attraction to animals or an abnormal desire to have sexual contact with animals."

Tiana from The Princess and the Frog turns into a frog after she kisses a frog prince. They wind up falling in love while attempting to get their respective spells reversed. Despite the fact that Tiana is a frog, she thinks of herself as a human.

So when she falls in love with the prince, she is actually having sexual feelings towards a frog.

  • Pocahontas on Random Cartoon Characters You Never Realized Suffer From Mental Disorders

    (#13) Pocahontas

    • Pocahontas, Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World, The New World, Disney Princess

    The Diagnosis: Schizophrenia

What Is Schizophrenia? According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Schizophrenia "is a serious mental illness that interferes with a person’s ability to think clearly, manage emotions, make decisions, and relate to others." Symptoms include hallucinations and delusions.

Look no further than Pocahontas's best friend to confirm this diagnosis. Whenever Pocahontas has a major issue, she goes to her magical talking tree. Talk about strong hallucinations. She is also fairly socially withdrawn, feeling like no one in her village really understands her. She has difficulty relating to people (though not so much with animals), and struggles with making decisions on her own.

  • Maleficent on Random Cartoon Characters You Never Realized Suffer From Mental Disorders

    (#12) Maleficent

    • Maleficent, Sleeping Beauty

The Diagnosis: Borderline personality disorder (BPD)

What Is BPD? According to PSYCOM, a person with borderline personality disorder has "inappropriate or extreme emotional reactions, highly impulsive behaviors, and a history of unstable relationships."

Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty is one of the most evil of all Disney villains. But viewers have to question where her evilness comes from. Is it rooted in her mental illness? It all seems to go downhill for Maleficent when she is not invited to Aurora's baptism. She is hurt and upset, and while mentally stable people would be able to handle these emotions, Maleficent feels putting a curse on Princess Aurora and everyone in the kingdom is a better choice.

One could argue that her reaction is not only incredibly impulsive, but irrationally motivated by her feelings as well. Maleficent is not able to reign in her anger or pain, which results in her erratic and unreasonable decision to go on a cursing rampage against her whole community. Her relationship history may seem short to the viewer, but given how many people her evil affected, it is safe to assume she does not have many healthy, loving, beneficial relationships. Additionally, she has to change into a dragon in order to handle any major emotional situations.

  • Queen on Random Cartoon Characters You Never Realized Suffer From Mental Disorders

    (#2) Queen

    • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, A Snow White Christmas, The 10th Kingdom, Snow White and the Huntsman, Mirror Mirror, 7 Dwarves – Men Alone in the Wood

The Diagnosis: Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD)

What Is NPD? According to the Mayo Clinic, NPD is " a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for admiration, and a lack of empathy for others. But behind this mask of ultraconfidence lies a fragile self-esteem that's vulnerable to the slightest criticism."

The Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is the quintessential example of NPD. She is completely engrossed with being the most beautiful person in the kingdom. She needs the constant affirmation from her mirror. Then, when she discovers that her step-daughter, Snow White, has become "the fairest of them all," extreme jealousy and envy sends her into a murderous rage. The Evil Queen absolutely refuses to stand by and play second fiddle in the beauty department to anyone, which shows her extreme lack of self-esteem and obsessive thirst for admiration.

    The Diagnosis: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

What Is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder? According to MedlinePlus, OCD is "a mental disorder in which people have unwanted and repeated thoughts, feelings, ideas, sensations (obsessions), and behaviors that drive them to do something over and over (compulsions)."

Ariel from The Little Mermaid clearly has signs of OCD; she is a bonafide hoarder, completely obsessed with collecting totally useless things. There is so much unneeded garbage in her residence that it is literally overflowing with stuff that she can't bring herself to throw away. She even sings all about it:

“I've got gadgets and gizmos a-plenty / I've got whozits and whatzits galore / You want thingamabobs? I've got twenty! / But who cares? No big deal / I want more!”
