  • Vegeta on Random Dragon Ball Universe Heroes

    (#1) Vegeta

    • Dragon Ball Z Kai, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn, Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound, Dragon Ball Z: Bardock – The Father of Goku, Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks, Dragon Ball Z: The Return of Cooler, Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan, Plan to Destroy the Saiya-jin, Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!!, Dragon Ball

Out of all of the characters on this list, Vegeta is probably the most famous for his about-face. He came to Earth with the intention of not only defeating Goku but also annihilating anyone who got in his way as a display of power.

The full story of his shift from evil to good is too complex to discuss in full here, but the short version is that going from a situation where his choices were either take lives or grapple with his own substantial losses to one where he could develop genuine emotional bonds led him to give up on villainy.  By the end of the series, he's still gruff and competitive, but he's also a caring father and husband

  • Piccolo on Random Dragon Ball Universe Heroes

    (#2) Piccolo

    • Dragon Ball Z Kai, Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z (US), Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!!, Dragonball Evolution, Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn, Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge, Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug, Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might, Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon, Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13!, Dragon Ball Z the Movie: The World's Strongest, Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone, Plan to Destroy the Saiya-jin, Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound, Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan, Dragon Ball Z: The Return of Cooler, Dragon Ball

When Piccolo first appeared, his primary goal was to destroy Goku - and he had a darn good reason for it. Goku not only defeated Piccolo's father in a tournament, he also ended his life. But when the two of them fight and Picollo loses, Goku decides to spare Piccolo's life, leading him to change up his loyalties and become not just an ally, but Gohan's mentor.

  • Android 17 & 18 on Random Dragon Ball Universe Heroes

    (#3) Android 17 & 18

Both Android 17 & 18 were kidnapped by Dr. Gero and scientifically modified against their will. For a while, they do Dr. Gero's bidding, even going so far as to destroy entire cities in the name of taking out Goku. Neither show any real remorse for a while, but they slowly rediscover their own free will and give up on villainy.

The two eventually renounce their evil ways and move onto more satisfying lives. Android 18 marries Krillin and has a daughter named Marron, while Android 17 adopts two kids and becomes a park ranger.

  • Tien Shinhan on Random Dragon Ball Universe Heroes

    (#4) Tien Shinhan

    • Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z Kai, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might, Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound, Dragon Ball: Mystical Adventure, Dragon Ball

When Tien Shinhan first appears, he's a member of the Crane School, a martial arts school that deploys underhanded tactics to win. As one of the best students, Tien is asked to go after Goku, who his teacher believes to be responsible for his brother's demise.

With the help of Master Roshi, Tien eventually realizes that the people he's been siding with aren't actually what they seem to be, and he joins Goku instead of opposing him. He was also Gokus opponent in the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, which doesn't make him a bad guy exactly, but still means that he isn't on the same side as the protagonist.

  • Majin Buu on Random Dragon Ball Universe Heroes

    (#5) Majin Buu

    • Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!!, Dragon Ball

Majin Buu first appears as Kid Buu, an evil demon of immense power who is willing and able to destroy everything in his path. After consuming the Grand Supreme Kai, he splits off into multiple forms, including "Innocent Buu" who is destructive because he doesn't know any better, not because he wants to cause harm. With guidance from Mr. Satan on how to exist in society - as well as some help from the Dragon Balls in forgetting his past sins - Buu becomes one of the good guys.

  • Android 16 on Random Dragon Ball Universe Heroes

    (#6) Android 16

    • Dragon Ball Z

Android 16 was always a peace loving person who was happier relaxing with nature than engaging in combat. But because he was built with a specific purpose in mind - revenge on Goku on behalf of Dr. Gero - he did have to face off against the good guys once or twice. But when Cell threatens the safety of humankind, Android 16 is easily swayed to help Goku and company defeat him.

  • Beerus on Random Dragon Ball Universe Heroes

    (#7) Beerus

Beerus is a god, so his concept of 'good' and 'evil' is pretty far outside of human morality. That being said, he did try to destroy Earth once, so he gets slapped with the villain label. He came over to the good side not because of any shift in his morals, but because he realized that destroying Earth meant destroying his access to a wide range of delicious foods.

  • Chiaotzu on Random Dragon Ball Universe Heroes

    (#8) Chiaotzu

Like Tien, Chiaotzu was a member of the Crane School. At the behest of their master, the two of them frequently cheated during tournaments, often using Chiaotzu's psychic powers. When Tien decides that he wants to do things fairly, Chiaotzu follows suit - he deeply respects his friend and typically defers to him, unless he has some specific reason not to.

When offered a spot at Master Roshi's school, Chiaotzu turns it down - even though he's betrayed his former master by refusing to comply with his awful demands, it goes against his morals to study under another master.

  • Ox-King on Random Dragon Ball Universe Heroes

    (#9) Ox-King

    • Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone, Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks, Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!!, Dragon Ball

When Chi Chi's father, the Ox King, is first introduced, he's a terrifying man who used violence and intimidation to achieve power. He was also extremely protective of his daughter, to the point where anyone who got near her would have to risk facing his wrath.

But the Ox King has mellowed out over the years, turning into a doting grandfather who is always happy to help out his family.

  • Yamcha on Random Dragon Ball Universe Heroes

    (#10) Yamcha

    • Dragon Ball Z Kai, Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball: The Path to Power, Dragon Ball: Curse of the Blood Rubies, Dragonball Evolution, Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound, Dragon Ball: Ssawora Son Goku, Igyeora Son Goku, Dragon Ball: The Magic Begins, Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might, Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!!, Dragon Ball: Mystical Adventure, Dragon Ball

When Yamcha is first introduced in Dragon Ball, he's a villain, albeit a bumbling one. He's a teenager who lives in the desert and robs travelers, all while doing whatever he can to avoid encountering what he fears most in the world: women.

Through a series of mishaps that end with his overcoming his fear and falling in love with Bulma, he develops a conscience and stops robbing people, choosing to align himself with the forces of good instead. Despite being a passionate warrior who cares deeply for his loved ones, though, he just isn't as strong as most of the other Z fighters, and is often the butt of fandom jokes

  • Launch (bad) on Random Dragon Ball Universe Heroes

    (#11) Launch (bad)

Rather than making the transition from villain to hero and staying that way, Launch actually flips back and forth on a regular basis. That's because she has a strange condition that causes her to swap personalities - and hair color - whenever she sneezes. The blue haired version of herself is kind and docile, while the blonde version is a straight-up criminal. Launch's two personalities aren't aware of each other, and they don't remember each other's actions, which has to make life pretty confusing - especially since it seems like just about everything makes her sneeze.

Despite these difficulties, Launch eventually does learn to control her transformation to a degree, becoming less "bad" when she's in her blonde form, and still being willing to help out the Z Fighters.

  • The Pilaf Gang on Random Dragon Ball Universe Heroes

    (#12) The Pilaf Gang

The Pilaf Gang are actually the first villains to ever appear in Dragon Ball, and while they weren't particularly formidable, especially when compared to later villains, they were technically trying to take over the world using the Dragon Balls, so that's not exactly ideal.

They reappear in Dragon Ball Super, having transformed into children thanks to a wish granted by Shenron. Rather than pursuing world domination, the gang is now helping out in Bulma's lab in exchange for room and board.

  • Oolong on Random Dragon Ball Universe Heroes

    (#13) Oolong

    • Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball: The Path to Power, Dragon Ball: Ssawora Son Goku, Igyeora Son Goku, Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound, Dragon Ball: Curse of the Blood Rubies, Dragon Ball: The Magic Begins, Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug, Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might, Dragon Ball: Mystical Adventure, Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge, Dragon Ball Z: The Return of Cooler, Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks, Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!!, Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan, Dragon Ball Z the Movie: The World's Strongest, Dragon Ball

When Oolong first appears, it's as a "demon" who took over the town of Aru, kidnapping the women and stealing the money for himself. He was able to do this after learning how to shapeshift. After Goku defeats him, he joins the good guys.

But Oolong didn't exactly become a morally upright citizen after all that - he proves to be lewd - but at least he stopped terrorizing the village and generally sided with the good guys on most issues.

  • Puar on Random Dragon Ball Universe Heroes

    (#14) Puar

    • Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball: The Path to Power, Dragon Ball: Curse of the Blood Rubies, Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound, Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might, Dragon Ball: Mystical Adventure, Dragon Ball: Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle

Puar is Yamcha's best friend and most loyal companion, so when Yamcha was a desert thief, Puar was helping him out. When Yamcha wanted to transition into a more honorable lifestyle, Puar was by his side.

For this reason, Puar's shift from villain to good guy isn't really the result of an internal shift. Honestly, if Yamcha ever went rogue again, Puar would probably do it too - though he might try to talk him out of it if he didn't think it was in Yamcha's best interest.

  • Frieza on Random Dragon Ball Universe Heroes

    (#15) Frieza

    • Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn, Plan to Destroy the Saiya-jin, Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge, Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock, Dragon Ball Z: Bardock – The Father of Goku, Dragon Ball

Unlike many of the characters on this list, what's surprising isn't that they were once a villain - it's that they ever stopped being one...and to be fair, he's less a 'good guy' now than he is a 'temporary ally.'

Frieza spent the entirety of Dragon Ball Z committing various atrocities, including destroying Planet Vegeta and attempting to destroy the Earth. In Dragon Ball Super, he teamed up with Goku and the rest of the Universe 7 team during the Tournament of Power. Sure, he didn't exactly have altruistic reasons for doing so, but he's still fighting by their side.
