M Or is a native New Zealander of the Polynesians. The Maori originated from settlers east of Polynesia, who arrived in New Zealand on a series of kayaking voyages between about 1320 and 1350. Through centuries of isolation, these settlers developed their own distinct culture, whose language, mythology, handicrafts, and performing arts developed independently of other Polynesia cultures. Some of the early Maori moved to the Chatham Islands, where their descendants became another indigenous Polynesian ethnic group in New Zealand, the Moriori.

The arrival of Europeans in New Zealand from the 17th century brought about a dramatic change in the Maori way of life. Māori have come to accept many aspects of Western society and culture. The initial relationship between the Maori and the Europeans was largely amicable, with the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi by 1840 and the coexistence of the two cultures.
