About This Tool

A summer resort in northern Michigan, USA. Located in Lake Huron. French explorers came here for the first time in the early 17th century. Due to its strategic location, the British built a fortress here in 1780. Belonged to the United States in 1783. It was once the seat of the American Fur Company. Occupied by British forces in the War of 1812. Returned to the United States in 1815. It is 14 kilometers (9 miles) in circumference and is covered by dense woods. Surrounded by limestone cliffs, the east is 103 meters (339 feet) high. It has been a state park since 1895. The island maintains the style of the 18th and 19th centuries, with horses, carriages, and bicycles as means of transportation, and cars are prohibited. The population is 469 (1990).
