According to 2009 statistics, 3,163,084 people declared to be of Russian descent in the United States, accounting for about 1.0 percent of the total U.S. population. The settlement of the Russian Americans can be traced back to the settlers of the Russian Empire who came to Alaska in the late 18th century. They lived mainly in Alaska, California, Oregon, and Washington. After the 19th-20th century, many immigrants from Russia, including Russian-speaking Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Russian Jews and other ethnic elements of the former Russia.
