Born in Bavaria, Benedict XVI is the eighth German pope to become a polyglot, having served as Minister of Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, chairman of the Pontifical Council of the Holy See, chairman of the International Theological Commission and Dean of the College of Cardinals. Benedict XVI was elected Pope in an election on April 19, 2005 and was formally elected pope on April 24. A former German cardinal who is also one of the eligible cardinals not ordained by John Paul II.
