About This Tool

The world’s oceans and coastlines are littered with thousands of shipwrecks spanning thousands of years of history. By some estimates, less than one percent of wrecks have been found, and only a fraction have been explored or excavated. Some 171 ships recorded in this random tool went down in the 16th century, the largest shipwreck in history and the largest shipwreck in the world.

Some of the ships sank because of their own material problems, some because of human problems caused by the tragedy of the sinking on different scales. Even the British-built ships, the masters of the sea at the time, though they were the fastest and most well-equipped, did not escape the tragedy of the sinking. Details of the 16th-century shipwreck, the main cause of the wreck, the ship’s builder and country of construction, and subsequent salvage information are all preserved in the generator, which can be viewed by interested parties.

Click the "Display All Items" button and you will get a list of shipwrecks in the 16th century.
