When the Civil War broke out, the arsenal on both sides was mostly old flintlock muskets, some of which were decades-old. The majority were variants of the Model 1816, the standard US infantry rifle of the time.
Ketchum Grenade

Primitive hand grenade developed by the Union. Was meant to be thrown like a paper airplane, and usually didn't go off, since they had to land on their nose.
Billinghurst-Requa Battery Gun

Another experimental machine gun, the Billinghurst-Requa lined up 25 rifle barrels in a frame, and fed a clip of 25 bullets into them. The Union used one in several battles, but it was unwieldy and soon made obsolete.
