About This Tool

In the 1870s, Britain set up regular passenger service in the Atlantic Ocean. Prior to this time, transport vessels were mixed cargo and passengers. Since then, the shipping world has raced to build large passenger ships that are fully equipped, luxurious, and comfortable. Since the 1960s, long-distance passenger ships at sea have gradually been replaced by long-distance jetliners, but smaller, tourist-oriented tourist ships and car passenger ships that can carry private cars at the same time have developed. Early steam freighters were general cargo ships. Oil tankers began to appear in the early 20th century. In the 1940s, bulk carriers were separated from general cargo ships. Oil tankers and bulk carriers account for a large proportion of the world’s Merchant Fleet by tonnage; traditional grocery ships still top the list. From the 1960s, transport ships became more specialized, and a series of new types of ships appeared, such as Knock Nevis, LPG ships, or Ro-ro ships, barges, and so on. The Knock Nevis has grown the most rapidly, containerizing much of the bulk cargo traffic in the developed world.
