  The Cleveland Museum of Art is supposedly one of the most actively haunted museums in the United States. According to the museum's interim director, Leslie Cade, the many ghosts of the museum are "still here telling their stories and every now and then they let us know they are here."

  The paintings in the west wing of the museum seem to be hotspots for paranormal activity. A little boy is sometimes seen running through the exhibits, dressed in the same clothing as one of the works in the gallery. Then there's the "man in gray," who can be seen standing in front of his own portrait - and slowly vanishing into it.

  The Fremantle Arts Centre, just outside of Perth, Western Australia, is one of the most haunted museums in the Southern Hemisphere. And no wonder: the building was once an insane asylum.

  For years, visitors have reported feeling a sense of unease upon entering the building. Others have felt the touch of ghostly hands - and even lips. Photographs in certain galleries reportedly change, with figures appearing and disappearing at random. Ghostly voices intoning "those are chains," and "it's not cold" have also been heard.

  (#3) A Mysterious Woman Rises Up Through The Floor At Torquay Museum

  In 2015, Torquay Museum in Devon, England was hosting a ghost hunting event when things got creepy. A snapshot from a supposedly empty room showed the apparition of a woman, dressed in antique clothing. Even eerier, she appears to be emerging up from the floor.

  She might not be the only spirit at the museum. Employees report seeing books fly off the shelves of their own accord, and spotting another female figure in blue.

  When you visit the Pharmacy Museum in New Orleans, keep your eyes open - you might see the spirit of the building's former owner. The infamous Dr. Dupas was rumored to have performed horrendous experiments on pregnant slaves in the 19th century.

  When the museum closes. Dr. Dupas begins his mischief. He flings books, moves the contents of display cases, and sets off the security alarm. Some staff and visitors have even seen his apparition. He appears much as he did in life, wearing a brown suit and a matching hat.

  The Museum of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City, NC, moved to a new building in 2005, but its antique contents seemed to have relocated spirits, too. Staff have reported so many strange sightings and noises that paranormal experts were called in to investigate.

  Some of the items on display include the belongings of 19-year-old Nell Cropsey, who was murdered in 1901 and dumped in a river. The culprit was never found; her boyfriend spent years in jail for her murder, but he was pardoned and later committed suicide. Her spirit might still linger by her old possessions.

  Another ghost said to haunt the museum is Fred Fearing, a local historian who donated a number of items to the collection. Staff members have claimed to have seen and identified his ghost, and even those who had never met him accurately described his appearance.

  A trip to Philadelphia's Mütter Museum is something visitors never forget. It's not that there are specific ghosts haunting the institution, which houses multitudes of medical oddities collected over centuries. It's just the very presence of those strange objects, many of which belonged to people who not only physically suffered in life, but also were objects of ridicule and shame.

  Staff and visitors report a general feeling of discomfort, and even dizziness, after spending time in the building. The Travel Channel agrees, and has ranked the Mütter Museum as one of the creepiest places on Earth.

  (#7) A Ghostly Scent Wafts Through The Hunter Museum

  According to museum staff, Chattanooga's Hunter Museum of American Art is home to at least five ghosts. Employees regularly sense that someone - or something - is watching them, and night shift security guards have spotted moving shadows within the galleries.

  While that's a fair bit of paranormal activity, only one of the ghosts has been identified to date. Her name was Augusta Hoffman, and she was the poor and unhappy relation to the Bennett family, who lived just next door to the Hunter Museum. Apparently, Augusta's spirit preferred not to stay at the site of her misery, and moved right into the museum galleries. Visitors and staff have reported seeing her move about the building and look out of windows. If they don't see her, they sometimes catch a whiff of her strange perfume.

  Augusta's life was tragic. She disappeared in 1915, leaving behind her belongings and even her last paycheck. The Bennett family claimed that Augusta had eloped with a secret lover. However, that wasn't the case. In 1924, some work was being done on the Bennett home, and a carpenter made a grisly discovery under the floorboards. He uncovered a skeleton, still wearing shoes, spectacles, and and false teeth, which were later identified by a local dentist as belonging to poor Augusta. Local officials and the state Attorney General arrested Mr. and Mrs. Bennett for her murder.

  (#8) Angry Spirits Lurk In the Bell Tower At The San Francisco Art Institute

  Beware the bell tower at the San Francisco Art Institute. It's been a center of paranormal activities since the 1940s, when a frightened watchman first reported hearing phantom footsteps on the stairs.

  Workers started renovating the tower in 1968, and all hell broke loose. Strange accidents started occurring on the site, and the construction crew was beset by setbacks and personal tragedies. The vengeful spirits even began destroying furniture.

  All the strange activity did not go unnoticed by students and visitors, and some of these decided to hold an official seance to contact the spirits. Supposedly, they discovered that the source of the negative energy was generations of frustrated art students.

  Over the years, several paranormal experts have been brought in to determine the source for the cold spots. No rational explanation was found, and the spirits have yet to reveal themselves.

  It's no surprise that the Warren's Occult Museum is supposedly haunted. Founded by paranormal experts Ed and Lorraine Warren, it was designed to hold a collection of frightful - and often possessed - items.

  The museum's showpiece is Annabelle, the doll whose malicious exploits figured in The Conjuring. According to the museum's owners, an exorcism was performed on the doll before it was placed in its glass box. However, it reportedly continues to move around and snarl at visitors.

  At least one person is said to have died as a result of contact with Annabelle. Supposedly, the man taunted the doll, telling her to "do your worst" to him. Right after the man left the museum, he was killed in a motorcycle accident.

  Stratford Hall is an imposing brick fortress that stands tall above a river in the Northern Neck of Virginia. It was home to the Lee family, who produced two signers of the Declaration of Independence, a famous Revolutionary War general, and Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Today, it is a museum and working farm open to the public.

  It's also rumored to house ghosts. One of these is supposedly Elizabeth McCarthy Storke, who reportedly had an affair with Henry Lee at age 14. To this day, she defends her virtue. A medium who visited the site claimed Elizabeth told her, "I didn't do it!"

  Another paranormal expert detected activity in the basement. Supposedly, the spirits of slaves who witnessed a murder remain there. Another spirit, that of a nanny named Madeleine, is said to linger in the nursery.

  The British Museum houses one of the most reportedly potent cursed artifacts in history: the stunning, hand-painted coffin cover belonging to a priestess of Amen-Ra.

  The Egyptian artifact's deadly reputation preceded its arrival to the museum. It was purchased by a man named Thomas Douglas Murray in 1889, but he didn't keep it for long. After a string of horrific tragedies - including the loss of Murray's arm to gangrene - he gave it to the museum. Once there, the coffin continued to wreak havoc, inflicting terrible luck on anyone who came into contact with it. It was even supposedly connected to the sinking of the Titanic.

  Museum employees claim that the artifact has rarely left its collection, and that the stories about it are untrue. But the piece is still known as "The Unlucky Mummy."

  A country as rich in history as Russia naturally lends itself to ghostly sightings and paranormal tales. The city of Moscow is no exception to the rule, and the Kremlin museums are particularly notorious for strange occurrences. For years, locals have told of the dark shadow of Tsar Ivan the Terrible walking back and forth across the Kremlin bell tower. The apparition of another controversial tsar, "The False Dmitri," is said to appear on the Kremlin wall.

  Shadowy figures are also spotted in the corridors of the Kremlin Palace, draped in shrouds. These could be disaffected civil servants from the Soviet era, or perhaps restless spirits from the cemetery that lies beneath the Palace.

  USSR founder Vladimir Lenin has been glimpsed as well. Josef Stalin may also appear during times of political and economic crisis.
